We were keeping vigil at Marshall's bedside. As soon as the light guttered in his eyes, my father dragged me to my chambers, frighteningly drunk. "Marshall was a disgrace from his birth to his last breath," he said. "Bested by a Noryette. It hadn't happened in centuries! And me. Bloody fool to ever expect diamonds from feces. But you. You're our only hope now. You will restore honor to our family!" Any grief I had over Marshall's death was instantly replaced with fury. Fury at my father.
